The roadworthiness Vehicle Inspection exercise is done majorly to prevent the breakdown of vehicles across the country. It also assists motorists detect different faults in their vehicles thereby reducing the rate of accidents in the country and safekeeping citizen’s life. The test is conducted every 6 months for commercial vehicles while it is done annually for every other vehicles except for exempted vehicles/ organizational fleet.
The Advent Of Vehicle Inspection Exercise
The new policy before vehicle roadworthiness certificates can be issued is that every vehicle must go through a vehicle inspection exercise and pass the exercise. Failure to do so will result in non-issuance of the original document.
Once payment for renewal is made, a referral note will be issued which will give the rider a 3-month grace period in case of a failed inspection and there is a need for repairs to be done.
The only time an inspection can be avoided is if the company or business is operating a fleet of vehicles actively working outside their registration area. In this case, a letter of exemption for roadworthiness would be written and submitted to the headquarters for approval.
The letter would contain details about the car; For example, registration number, type of vehicle and location. It must also show that the company is a registered company.
For your vehicle to pass the inspection test, these are the parts you must make sure are in good condition;
Safety equipment like your ‘’C’’caution (2) and your fire extinguisher
Spare tyre must be in good shape and ready to fix
All vehicle lights must be working e.g; Two headlights, brake lights, turn signal lights, reflectors and parking lights
The horn must be heard at a distance of 60 meters
The windshield must not be broken or cracked and the wipers must be working properly
The engine must be in good condition as the smoke at the exhaust would be checked.
The general body including the sand protectors should be in good shape
The brake is one of the most important parts that would be checked
What Happens If You Fail?
If your vehicle fails the exercise, you will be issued a document which will state why your vehicle failed and the repairs you need to do on the vehicle. Once that has been done, you can go back and get a successful inspection exercise.
Furthermore, there are instances where you have minor repairs that would not affect your “Pass” grade. However, you would be instructed to make the repairs.
